New Delhi, March 23, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday addressed the Lok Sabha on the escalating situation in West Asia, highlighting the serious economic, strategic and humanitarian challenges posed by the ongoing conflict, even as fresh global developments indicate a possible pause in hostilities.
Noting that the crisis has continued for over three weeks, the Prime Minister said the conflict has had “deeply adverse consequences” on global stability and human lives. He emphasized that the international community is pushing for an early resolution. “The whole world is urging all parties for the earliest possible resolution of this crisis,” he said.
Significantly, the Prime Minister’s remarks come amid reports that US President Donald Trump and Iranian authorities have announced a cessation of hostilities, raising cautious hopes of de-escalation in the region.
India’s Stakes High in West Asia
PM Modi underlined that India has substantial stakes in the region, ranging from trade and energy security to the safety of its diaspora. He pointed out that a large portion of India’s crude oil and gas imports passes through conflict-affected zones, particularly critical routes like the Strait of Hormuz.
He also highlighted that nearly one crore Indians live and work in Gulf countries, along with many Indian crew members operating in regional waters. “India’s concerns are naturally greater,” he said, calling for a unified voice from Parliament.
Massive Evacuation and Global Outreach
Detailing India’s response, the Prime Minister said over 3.75 lakh Indians have been safely evacuated since the conflict began, including around 1,000 nationals from Iran—many of them students. He assured that Indian missions abroad remain fully active, providing round-the-clock assistance through helplines and advisories.
He added that he has personally spoken to leaders across West Asia, who have assured the safety of Indian citizens. “The government is sensitive, vigilant, and ready to provide every assistance,” he said.
Energy Security and Economic Preparedness
Addressing concerns over energy supplies, PM Modi acknowledged disruptions in shipping routes but assured that India has taken proactive steps to maintain fuel availability. He highlighted that India has diversified its energy imports from 27 to 41 countries over the past decade, reducing dependence on any single region.
He also pointed to the country’s growing Strategic Petroleum Reserves, currently exceeding 53 lakh metric tonnes, with plans for further expansion.
The Prime Minister stressed that sustained investments in alternative energy—including ethanol blending, renewable power, and electrification—have strengthened India’s resilience in the face of global shocks.
Agriculture, Power and Domestic Stability
Reassuring farmers, PM Modi said India has adequate foodgrain stocks and robust contingency plans for the Kharif season. He reiterated that the government has historically shielded farmers from global price shocks, citing fertilizer subsidies during crises.
On power supply, he said India is well-prepared to meet rising summer demand, backed by record coal production and expanding renewable capacity, which now accounts for nearly half of the country’s installed power base.
Diplomatic Push for Peace
Reaffirming India’s position, the Prime Minister said the country has consistently advocated de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy. He condemned attacks on civilians and disruptions to international shipping routes.
“India’s effort is to encourage all parties to arrive at a peaceful resolution as soon as possible,” he said, adding that safe passage of Indian vessels remains a top priority.
Security Alert and Call for Unity
The Prime Minister also warned of potential internal security challenges arising from the conflict, stating that all agencies have been put on high alert across coastal, border, cyber, and strategic domains.
Concluding his address, PM Modi urged citizens and states to remain vigilant against misinformation, hoarding, and black-marketing. Drawing parallels with the collective response during the COVID-19 pandemic, he called for unity and resilience.
“When every government and every citizen of this country walk together, we can challenge every challenge,” he said.
