New Delhi, March 22: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday chaired a crucial meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to review the evolving situation arising out of the ongoing West Asia conflict and its potential impact on India.
According to a statement issued by the Press Information Bureau, the high-level panel undertook a comprehensive assessment of the global scenario, including immediate and long-term economic implications, and discussed a wide range of mitigation strategies.
Focus on Essential Supplies and Economic Stability
The CCS reviewed sector-wise preparedness across agriculture, fertilisers, food security, petroleum, power, MSMEs, trade, shipping, and finance. A key focus of the meeting was ensuring uninterrupted availability of essential commodities such as food, fuel, and energy.
Officials presented a detailed roadmap covering short-, medium-, and long-term measures to safeguard supply chains and maintain macroeconomic stability amid global uncertainties.
Fertiliser Availability and Farmer Support
With the upcoming Kharif season in mind, the committee assessed fertiliser availability and assured that existing buffer stocks would ensure timely supply. The government is also exploring alternate global sources to prevent any future disruptions, reinforcing food security for farmers.
No Power Shortage Expected
The government expressed confidence that adequate coal reserves at power plants would prevent any electricity shortages, even as global energy markets remain volatile.
Diversification of Imports and Exports
Recognising potential disruptions in global trade, the CCS discussed strategies to diversify import sources for critical sectors such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemicals. At the same time, efforts will be made to identify new export destinations to sustain and grow Indian trade.
Whole-of-Government Approach
In a key directive, the Prime Minister called for a “whole-of-government approach”, announcing the formation of a dedicated group of ministers and secretaries to coordinate response measures. Sector-specific groups will also engage with stakeholders to fine-tune implementation.
Warning Against Hoarding and Black Marketing
Highlighting the need to protect citizens from inflationary pressures and shortages, the Prime Minister stressed close coordination with state governments to prevent hoarding and black marketing of essential goods.
Describing the conflict as an evolving global challenge, Modi said that while its impact is being felt worldwide, the government’s priority remains to minimise inconvenience to Indian citizens and ensure economic resilience.
